This product delivers what it promised, sun protection and antioxidant. For the price I consider this a well worthy buy.
The antioxidant content is impressive. Even better most of them are derived from plants. The ingredient zizyphus jujuba turns out to be an ancient Chinese medicine that recently was discovered to have antioxidant properties. Another interesting ingredient is poria cocos extract which is also a Chinese medicine known as Fu ling. It is derived from a mushroom which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Besides there are vitamin C and E. The combination of sun protection and antioxidants would ensure age prevent and free radical damage repair.
For a sun block this product is also quite moisturizing with safflower seed oil, rosemary extract and sunflower seed oil.
There are also plant-extracted anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as cucumber, gentian root extract, and chamomilla flower oil to sooth skin and control oil secretion.
The ingredient of concern is angelica archangelica root oil. According to our investigation this ingredient may have some antioxidant ability but it contains photosensitive constituents that increase the chances of UV-radiation caused damage. It is puzzling why Clinique would put a light-sensitive ingredient in a sun protection.
Safety alert: Cautious review based on scientific information of the product ingredients.

Skin irritation |
 |
- contains angelica archangelica root oil. The oil contains photosensitive constituents that increase the chances of UV-radiation caused damage. Although it may have some antioxidant ability, it is a risky ingredient to use on skin if it is exposed to sunlight.
- contains birch bark extract, which is derived from the Betula alba (other name white birch). It can have potent antioxidant properties but also have astringent properties that severely irritate skin.
- contains hexylene glycol, also known as propylene glycol (PG). PG is derived from petroleum and used in cosmetics as solvents, surfactants, and wetting agents. It is used to enhance ingredient penetration and as a humidifying agent. It is easily absorbed through skin and is a potent skin irritant. PG could provoke skin irritation and sensitization at concentration as low as 2%. In fact U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a warning to avoid skin contact to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. The exact concentration of PG in this product is unclear.
