It deeply concerns me to see the third abundant ingredient is talc. Talc is naturally occurring silicate mineral of magnesium. It is very similar in structure and properties to the potent carcinogen asbestos. Talc have been shown to cause tumors in the ovaries and lungs. In 1973 FDA warned about limiting the amount of asbestos-like talc in cosmetics but no ruling was made. As a result cosmetic grade talc remains non-regulated by the federal government. Even without any asbestos-resemblance cosmetic grade talc has been reported to cause tumors in animal subjects in 1993 National Toxicology Program studies. It is strongly suggested to avoid products containing talc, especially when concentration is this high.
Another ingredient that raises concern is papain. Papain is the enzyme extracted from papaya. There was one study showed that in pure form papain may be effective for exfoliation. However topical use of papain can cause severe irritation, itching, and allergic reactions. Dialy exposure to such ingredient significantly increases the chance of sensitization.
Grapefruit oil can adjust the pH and may have antioxidant and brightening properties. But topical application may cause contact dermatitis or a phototoxic reaction when skin is exposed to sunlight.
On the good side this product is designed for normal to oily skin with ingredients such as allyl methacrylate crosspolymer. It controls oil by aborbing oil two or three time of its own weight but usually won't clog pores. Another ingredient salicylic acid (Beta hydroxy acid, BHA) is a multifunctional acne-fighting ingredient. Salicylic acid is an effective exfoliant and also an anti-irritant. In concentrations of 0.5% to 2%, it gently exfoliates the surface of skin and penetrates into the pore, and thus can exfoliate inside the pore as well as on the surface of the skin, which makes it effective for reducing blemishes, including blackheads and whiteheads. It also treats acnes due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Salicylic acid can improve skin thickness, barrier functions, and collagen production.
Another good ingredient is ginkgo biloba leaf extract. It has potent antioxidant and microcirculation-stimulating effect.
I am displeased to see that the product claims "Contains no artificial color" while there is indeed colorant titanium dioxide (CI 77891) present. Although titanium dioxide also acts as sun protection agent, I am sure here it is used as colorant. Overall this shapes up to be an unsafe and high-risk product.
