Honestly I don't know what "natural collagen" means, what is natural collagen really? What is the source of that? L'Oreal didn't explain. "Natural" is such a vague and abused notion. The collagen ingredient is quite farther down the list. Collagen supports skin and cartilage. Collagen works in tandem with elastin to give skin its texture, structure, and appearance. Sun damage (extrinsic aging) and aging (intrinsic aging) causes collagen in the skin to deteriorate. As a cosmetic ingredient, collagen is derived from animal sources, but plant derivatives that act like collagen (pseudo-collagen) are also used. In any form, collagen is a good water-binding agent. Collagen in cosmetics, regardless of the source, has never been shown to have a direct effect on producing or building collagen in skin.
The moisturizing effect is ok. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a suspension of microscopic synthetic polymer beads (microspheres) in a vehicle such as bovine collagen, hyaluronic acid or some other colloidal suspending agent. PMMA can be used to improve the skin's contour and reduce depressions in the skin due to scars, injury or lines. They are used to correct facial lines and features that could have been treated with collagen replacement therapy or hyaluronic therapy. Another similar ingredient is sodium chondroitin sulfate is derived from natural mucopolysaccharides. It is a good water-binding agent and maintains skin homeostasis.
But I will have to say, the bad outweighes the good in this product.
I am extremely disappointed to see the third ingredient, denatured alcohol. It is not only extremely drying and irritating to skin, but also can generate free-radical damage. If listed as the first few ingredients which means the concentration is significantly high, it will be problematic for all skin types.
There is also triethanolamine in this product. Triethanolamine is used in cosmetics as a pH balancer. Like all amines, it has the potential for creating nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are readily absorbed through skin and they have been proved to be strong carcinogen. Whether or not the concentrations used in cosmetics should be of concern is still a matter of debate. Better avoid if possible.
And too much fragrance.
