This is more like a makeup with SPF than a moisturizer, hence the more than usual content of colorants.
That being said, this product is adequate in term of moisturizing. For example the ingredient lecithin is phospholipid found in egg yolks and the membranes of plant and animal cells. It is widely used in cosmetics as an emollient and water-binding agent.
The antioxidant properties of this product is impressive. Antioxidants help protect skin from and repair free radical damage. The ingredient chitosan ascorbate is the chitosan salt of the ascorbic acid (vitamin C). It functions as antioxidant (vitamin C), skin conditioning and film-forming agent. The structure of one of its main components, chitin, closely resembles that of mucopolysaccharides naturally found in skin whose function is to moisturize and lubricate. Thus, in addition to being antioxidant, chitosan ascorbate hydrates by supplying water to the skin, avoiding dehydration through water retention and providing a protective film on the epidermis. Another ingredient punica granatum extract see pomegranate extract. Pomegranate extract is an effective anticarcinogen and antioxidant when eaten. But whether the same benefits translate into topical use has not been studied.
However, the ingredient propylene glycol (PG) raises concerns. PG is derived from petroleum and used in cosmetics as solvents, surfactants, and wetting agents. It is used to enhance ingredient penetration and as a humidifying agent. It is easily absorbed through skin and is a potent skin irritant. PG could provoke skin irritation and sensitization at concentration as low as 2%. In fact U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a warning to avoid skin contact to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities.
The SPF 15 is a nice to have. Even though it could be higher since SPF 30 is recommended for daily use.
