The third ingredient is stable form of vitamin C. The fourth ingredient phosphatidylcholine is the natural component of cell membrane. Also it is the active ingredient in lecithin. It is considered an excellent water-binding agent and enhances the penetration of other ingredients into skin.
DMAE is the trademark ingredient of PerriconeMD. It's supposed to "provide ultimate firming benefits to skin beginning to lose elasticity; enhance facial contours and delivers a "lifted," tightened, and toned appearance to the skin; diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles." But it has only been reported to prevent aging based on a small study by Dr.Perricone himself, the manufacturer of the brand. So the claims are not solidly supported.
There are abundant content of peptides. Peptides are strains of amino acids, which are building blocks of proteins such as collagen and elastin. For example acetyl hexapeptide-3 is synthetical peptide that may relax muscles to reduce the appearance of expression lines, similar to Botox. But some subsequent studies showed it's far less effective than Botox. Palmitoyl oligopeptides (Palmitoyl pentapeptide, Matrixyl) is a new amino-peptide. It stimulates collagen, elastin and glucosaminoglycans synthesis. So they should help reduce wrinkles.
There is also glycolic acid (alpha hydroxy acid, AHAs). There is a lot of debate over AHA use in cosmetics. Concentration below 10% is considered useless. When the concentration is over 10%, AHA exfoliates upper layer skin by breaking the connective tissues between cells. This “chemical peel” reveals newer and more youthful looking skin. Also glycolic acid draws moisturizers into the newly-exfoliated skin surface. However, AHAs can leave skin extremely sensitive, especially to sun rays. So always wear sunscreen after use.
